What is the Application Process for a Canadian Study Permit?

The process of obtaining a study permit in Canada consists of four steps:

1. Check your eligibility:

A Canadian study permit is only available if you meet the eligibility requirements. This includes:

  • an acceptance letter from a DLI,
  • proof of financial support,
  • supporting documents (varies depending on your countries of citizenship and residence)

2. Prepare your application:

Upon fulfilling all eligibility requirements, you can begin preparing your study permit application. Ensure that you have all the documents needed for your country. Your application may be rejected by an immigration officer if you fail to meet the requirements. It is recommended to have your application reviewed by a qualified immigration professional before submitting it.

3. Submit your study permit application: You have two options when submitting your application:

  • To submit an electronic application, please create an account on the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (known as IRCC) website. You may also scan your documents and upload them electronically.
  • You may also submit a paper-based application by mailing hard copies of your documents to the Visa Application Centre (VAC) that is responsible for your country.

4. After your study permit has been approved, you are welcome to come to Canada.

It is not possible for you to obtain your Canadian study permit before arriving at a Canadian Port of Entry (POE). The Canadian government will issue you a Letter of Introduction to Ports of Entry if your permit is approved. When you arrive in Canada, it is necessary to present this letter to an immigration official to receive your study permit.

How Long Does it Take to Apply for a Canadian Study Permit?

Study permits are generally processed within a range of timeframes. Processing times vary according to the country in which you reside.

As a general rule, processing time is 1 to 2 weeks, but some applicants may have to wait up to 16 weeks. This depends on the number of applications received. It is possible that your application may be delayed if you submit it close to the start of Canada's academic year.

In order to study at a Canadian school, you must have a strong command of either English or French.

Language proficiency requirements for international students are imposed by postsecondary institutions in Canada. Each institution has its own requirements.

An important part of your study permit application is the letter of intent. It should outline your plans for studying in the country and your goals. Applicants are required to acknowledge the conditions of being an approved Canadian student.
